Description

Oyster shell recovery solutions

We noted that a market for oyster shell flakes existed in France, but was served at the time only by imported products. In the Marennes-Oléron region and all French oyster growing areas, shell waste was being dumped behind businesses and on roadsides. It seemed logical to create a French product by recycling those shells

Qualitative benefits

Provide a new life for shell waste.

Technical resources

An initial operational processing plant was set up in November 1989.

Activities included sorting, drying, grinding, screening and packaging.

In 2010-2011, the production building was rebuilt and a storage hangar erected. A 100 kWp photovoltaic system was installed, and the production facilities were redesigned and automated, with support from the CRITT Agroalimentaire innovation centre.

Human resources

In 2010-2011, the project was designed with input from a trainee engineer from ENSMA Poitiers engineering, recruited with the assistance of CRCI.
