Description

Faced with the danger posed by plastic waste today, it has become urgent to design new materials that are compatible with life cycles: materials that are eco-sourced, biodegradable and that can be assimilated by living organisms.

In response to this growing problem, we have developed Scalite, a material entirely made from a co-product of fishing, as part of a circular economy initiative.

Qualitative benefits

As a substitute for plastic, Scalite has many applications. We have chosen to focus on two applications: eyeglasses and packaging.

Through these applications we hope to attain two objectives:

1- Boost awareness of the material by producing an object. Glasses are a high value-added accessory that offers much scope for creativity with reasonable technical imperatives.

2 - Have a real impact on plastic waste. For this purpose we are carrying out a study for the design of food packaging of the tray type.

Stages of the initiative

Material R&D: Validation of the material manufacturing process

Characterization of the material

Industrial tool: Defining needs

Writing the specifications

Identifying suppliers

Ordering machines

Manufacturing workshop test phase

The first obstacle identified was the question of resources, which was lifted in late 2018.

The current obstacle is the development of the production process and in particular our ability to increase production capacity. Work is under way to remove this obstacle.

One of the main driving forces is to identify captive markets and enhance the value of the material by promoting its capabilities. A market study on this subject is planned.

The ability to exchange views with other professionals who have had the same experience and learn from their feedback is also a valuable driving force.
